HISTORICAL LANDSCAPE OF SARMISHSAI GORGE

The southern slope of the Karatau mountain ridge comprises many picturesque gorges. Among these gorges, the biggest one is Sarmishsai. We find here a historical landscape–like an open-air museum–with many extremely peculiar “art galleries”, which are a heritage from the ancient nomads and sedentary tribes of the Zarafshan River Valley.  Sarmishsai Rock Art site and its buffer zone territories with more than 200 prehistoric and historic petyroglyphs and archaeological monuments comprise a cultural landscape of high national and international importance.  Inhabited areas and wilderness, cultivated and grazing land, settlements and sacred places are all elements of a whole cultural and natural landscapes of Sarmishsai.
